| Hemat Gryffe Women’s Aid Gryffe Women’s Aid was founded in 1981 as the first Asian, Black and Minority Ethnic Women’s Aid Group in Scotland. Initially 15 women volunteered to run the refuge in Inverclyde to accommodate the growing number of Asian women fleeing domestic abuse. The project was named Gryffe as the refuge was situated near the river Gryffe in Kilmacolm and from there safe refuge accommodation, information and support was provided for sixteen years.In 1995 our drop in centre opened at 24 Willowbank Street, Glasgow. It was then that the word ‘Hemat’ (meaning courage) was added to our business name. We are now widely known as Hemat Gryffe Women’s Aid. |
